Star apple (aka caimito) is named after the star shape found inside the pulp when you cut it in half (around its equator).
It is also called milk fruit for its milky looking juices that leak out of the fruit when it is cut open.
Caimito is native to the Isthmus of Panama. It has spread to the Greater Antilles and the West Indies and is now grown throughout the tropics, including Southeast Asia.
All of the star apple we offer is grown in South Florida.
The texture is juicy and sort of similar to a ripe hachiya persimmon. The flavor is sweet but not overly sweet, it’s sort of like a grape or berry but there’s no tartness to it.
The milky sap inside gives it a comforting almost nostalgic feeling when eating it.
If you look closely you’ll see what almost appears to be fibers inside but it’s completely fiberless in texture. This fruit is truly out of this world in flavor and texture.
