The pepino dulce (which translates to sweet cucumber in English) is native to the Andean region of South America.
The texture is similar to a melon and the flavor is similar to a cucumber, but a little bit more sweet. It is technically not a melon. This fruit is actually a member of the nightshade plant family and is related to tree tomato and lulo.
You can cut them in half, scoop out the seeds, and eat the insides with a spoon or add them to fruit salads. Since the flavor is mild, it takes on the flavor of any spices added to it and can be made into salsa or even cooked like a squash.
Pepino Melon has Vitamins A, C, K, and B-complex vitamins such as thiamin, niacin, folic acid, and riboflavin, as well as minerals like iron, phosphorous, copper, calcium, and potassium.
