Did you know that between 1870 and the late 1950s, the primary type of bananas sold in the US was the Gros Michel?
These bananas were chosen for their pleasing taste and smooth consistency, which made them perfect for commercial production.
Unfortunately, this variety was almost completely eradicated by the Panama Disease, and the Cavendish banana became the new go-to type found in most grocery stores.
While you won't typically find Gros Michel bananas in supermarkets anymore, they are still grown by small-scale farmers.Â
