It's atemoya season!
Atemoya is a mix of sugar apple and cherimoya (Annona cherimola × squamosa). It is a rare member of the anonnaceae family.
The flesh is juicy yet firm like a cherimoya and the flavor is sweet like a sugar apple, with notes of pineapple and banana.
The two main atemoya varieties we offer are Geffner (which originates from Israel) and African Pride (which originates from South Africa).
Geffner typically has pronounced "spikes" on the outer skin and African Pride (AP) is usually more smooth.
Your box may contain one or multiple varieties of atemoya, depending on what is ready to harvest when we ship your order.
The first documented cross pollination of sugar apple and cherimoya (atemoya) was made in Miami in 1908.
This fruit is non-gmo. It is the result of natural selection. Most annonas can cross pollinate which allows humans and other pollinators to create new species like atemoya.
