Canistel (also known as eggfruit) is back in season!
This is a very rich and decadent fruit. Some say it is an acquired taste thanks to its wide range of flavors.
Eggfruit is creamy and sweet, but sometimes has a hint of savory. The flavor of ripe canistel is sometimes compared to cheesecake.
The texture is often compared to a hard-boiled egg yolk, hence the name eggfruit.
It is native to Southern Mexico, Central America, and northern South America.
The canistel we offer is grown in South Florida.
Make sure your eggfruit is soft enough to peel open with your hands for optimal enjoyment. If eaten unripe, it is a bit chalky. When it is fully ripe, it will be creamy.
Important Note: Canistel varieties come in many different shapes and sizes. There's long and skinny, short and fat, as big as your head, as small as a tangerine, and everything in between.
The “Small Box” will generally contain smaller pieces of fruit and the “Large Box” will generally contain larger pieces of fruit.
