The Health Benefits of Soursop
Soursop, also known as guanabana, comes from the graviola tree. The fruit itself is known for its many health benefits such as: improving digestion, energy boosting, and alleviating pain. It has also been used as an anti-depressant! It is very rich in vitamins and minerals such as:
- Vitamin C
Along with the many health benefits that the fruit contains, the leaves are also used by people to treat stomach distress, pain, cough, asthma, and fever.
Here at Miami Fruit, we sell two different kinds of soursop. The more well known soursop is also known as guanoabana in many South American countries where it originates from, and the lesser known fruit known as mountain soursop. There are a few similarities and differences between the two fruits. It's best to understand the differences and compare the two in order to choose the right fruit for you.
Soursop (guanabana) is still known for all the health benefits mention above, but is more well known of the two for its sweet and slightly sour flavor. It has a very creamy almost yogurt-like texture when ripe. Many people make a sweet drink from the juice of this fruit.
Mountain soursop is also known for all of the health benefits mentioned above, but it's also known for an additional health benefit that could potentially change peoples lives.
At least one study has found it effective against multi-drug resistant cancer cells (Sloan-Kettering 2011, Oberlies et al. 1997). Acetogenins are the alkaloid compounds thought to be responsible for these effects, although other components, including quinolones, annopentocins, and annomuricins may also be involved.
Unlike regular soursop, mountain soursop is not sweet at all. It has a very interesting sour/savory flavor.
We hand-pick the best quality soursop and mountain soursop that grows on the mainland United States!
