Canistel is native to northern South America where related species are indigenous.
Apparently, it occurs wild only in southern Mexico (including Yucatan), Belize, Guatemala and El Salvador.
Rare fruit enthusiasts have been growing Canistel in South Florida for years, but no one grows it commercially possibly because it only ripens properly when picked yellow.
