Description

Origin: Cranberry beans, also known as borlotti or Romano beans, originated in Central and South America and were later cultivated extensively in Italy and throughout the Mediterranean. They belong to the Phaseolus vulgaris species, the same species as pinto and kidney beans, and are prized in Italian and Latin cuisines.

Flavor Profile: When cooked, cranberry beans have a rich, nutty, slightly sweet flavor often compared to chestnuts. Their creamy, smooth texture makes them hearty and satisfying without being heavy.

Cranberry beans are valued for their nutritional benefits and are a staple in traditional, whole-food diets.

They are an excellent source of plant-based protein and dietary fiber, and provide important minerals including iron, magnesium, potassium, and folate, supporting overall energy, digestion, and heart health.

How To Eat: Cranberry beans must be cooked before eating. Shell fresh beans or rinse dried beans, then simmer in water or broth until tender. The color may change when cooked. They are delicious in soups, stews, pasta dishes, salads, or simply drizzled with olive oil and seasoned with salt and herbs.
